With the high demand from customers requesting colour coding on springs, we decided to put our heads together and come up with an automated concept to speed up the manufacturing process and reduce costs.
The previous process was to hand paint a stripe down the springs with a brush and pass them through a conveyor oven to dry. This was very time consuming and required the full time use of an oven.
Our aim was to come up with a concept to speed up the process, reduce the pressure on the operator and dry the paint all in one compact machine. This would improve capacity on the painting cell and improve capacity for hot-prestressing and stress relieving due to the added conveyor oven.
Our engineering team drew up a CAD model of the ideal finished product and the components required. From this point we made a few minor changes to improve the design and started the project. We had some key parts manufactured by a local machine shop and made several components at our facility before putting everything together.

After some trials, we fine-tuned the process and now we are using the machine in full scale production. This machine has adjustable run speed which can run at 2,000 parts per hour, easy to change paint pot/colour, adjustable paint thickness and temperature drying up to 120°C. One of many machines built at MPSL for process and cost improvement.
